In a two-day conference held in Mogadishu, experts from various fields convened to discuss pressing issues facing Somalia – disaster management and language preservation. The event, co-organized by the Somali Language Development Association (SOLDA) and the University of Mogadishu, brought together over 20 research studies, four panel discussions, and contributions from more than 15 experts.
Mohamed Farah, the Director of the Language Management Center at the University of Mogadishu and a member of the conference organizing committee, expressed optimism about the outcomes. “If the recommendations and findings from these diverse studies are implemented, we can find lasting solutions to the challenges plaguing our nation,” he stated.
The conference delved into a range of topics, including the root causes of disasters and strategies for effective response and recovery. Additionally, discussions centered on the revitalization of Somali languages, which have faced erosion due to various factors.
Farah emphasized the significance of the conference, stating, “Since Somalia has experienced numerous disasters, it is crucial to understand their underlying causes to develop appropriate solutions.” He commended the Somali experts who conducted extensive research, expressing confidence that their findings will pave the way for meaningful change.
Moving forward, Farah called upon government ministries, agencies, and stakeholders to incorporate the conference’s recommendations into their policies and daily operations. “By integrating these solutions into their strategies, we can effectively address the impacts of droughts, famines, and other calamities that have afflicted our country,” he concluded.
The conference underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling Somalia’s multifaceted challenges, highlighting the potential for research-driven solutions to create a more resilient and culturally vibrant nation.
