Transforming Lives: A New Water Source Brings Relief to Beer Canoy Community

In the Beer Canoy area, located on the northern outskirts of Baidoa city, the community has grappled with a severe water shortage for many years, adversely impacting the lives of residents and the local environment. However, a recent collaborative effort between the Southwest State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has brought much-needed relief to the area.
After eight months of construction and preparation, a new large-scale water source has been officially handed over to the Beer Canoy community. This project, aimed at addressing the water needs of the local population, was jointly implemented by the Southwest State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and the Federal Ministry, with financial support from UNDP.
During the handover ceremony, Libaan Aw Khaliif, the Director of the Water Department at the Southwest State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, emphasized the significance of the project and its intended beneficiaries. “Today, we are here in the Beer Canoy area to officially hand over this water source to the local community committee and its chairman. The community will now manage and maintain the water source for their benefit.”
Khaliif further explained that a dedicated committee had been trained to oversee the operation and maintenance of the water source, ensuring its sustainable use and equitable distribution among the community members. The newly constructed well, with a depth of approximately four meters, is expected to provide a reliable water supply, addressing the long-standing water scarcity in the area.
One of the committee members expressed gratitude to the Southwest State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, the Federal Ministry, and UNDP for their collaborative efforts in bringing this vital resource to their community. “We extend our sincere appreciation to the Southwest State Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, the Federal Ministry, and UNDP for their support and commitment to addressing our urgent need for water.”
The community representative highlighted the transformative impact the water source will have on various aspects of their lives, including livestock rearing, agriculture, and overall well-being. With access to clean water, the Beer Canoy area is poised to experience significant improvements in living conditions and economic opportunities.
This successful project serves as a testament to the power of collaboration between government entities, international organizations, and local communities in addressing critical development challenges and improving the lives of vulnerable populations.
