Tackling Animal Disease Outbreaks: Authorities Respond to Pastoralist Concerns in Sabaax, Hiiraan Region

In a proactive move to address the escalating livestock disease crisis affecting pastoralist communities, authorities from Geljire District in Hiiraan region visited the village of Sabaax to assess the situation firsthand. The delegation, led by the Deputy District Commissioner and accompanied by the District Veterinary Officer and Education Officer, engaged with local residents to understand the extent of the disease outbreaks impacting their livestock.
The visit came in response to growing concerns from pastoralist households in Sabaax, who rely heavily on their animals for sustenance and livelihood. With recurring drought conditions exacerbating the spread of diseases, the community has been grappling with substantial livestock losses, posing a severe threat to their well-being.
During the visit, community members candidly shared their plight, highlighting the urgent need for veterinary interventions and disease control measures. The Deputy District Commissioner, Abdi Khalid Omar Dirie, acknowledged the severity of the situation and pledged the district’s commitment to supporting the affected communities.
“We have come to listen to your concerns and understand the challenges you are facing,” Dirie stated. “Our administration is dedicated to addressing the livestock disease outbreaks and providing the necessary assistance to safeguard your animals’ health and, consequently, your livelihoods.”
The District Veterinary Officer, Abdikarim Shire Hussein Haji, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the disease outbreaks, identifying various types of infections affecting the livestock. He assured the community that immediate action would be taken to contain the spread and provide appropriate treatment.
“We have noted the presence of multiple livestock diseases in the area,” Haji said. “Our team will work tirelessly to respond to these outbreaks, administering necessary vaccinations and medications to curb the impact on your herds.”
In addition to addressing the veterinary needs, the delegation recognized the importance of education in empowering the community. The District Education Officer, Dahir Abdullahi Dhore, pledged to explore avenues for establishing educational facilities in the area, acknowledging the lack of accessible learning opportunities for children.
As the visit concluded, the authorities reiterated their commitment to collaborating with the pastoralist communities, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are prioritized. The delegation’s visit has instilled hope among the residents of Sabaax, who eagerly await the promised interventions to safeguard their livestock and, ultimately, their way of life.
