A Somali Returnee’s Journey: From Displacement to Homecoming

After years of displacement and hardship, Mahmoud Abdi Haji Fah, a former Somali ambassador to Qatar, has finally returned to his beloved homeland. In an emotional video, he recounts his arduous journey and the overwhelming sense of joy and freedom he feels upon setting foot on Somali soil once again.
Mahmoud’s story is one of resilience and unwavering determination. Forced to flee Somalia due to conflict and instability, he spent over 23 years in exile, enduring countless challenges and adversities. However, his love for his country and his people never wavered, and he longed for the day when he could return home.
“For 24 hours before my arrival, I was referred to as a ‘muhajir’ (immigrant) or ‘musafir’ (traveler),” Mahmoud shares. “But now that I have returned to my country, I am a citizen again, a true son of the soil.”
His homecoming was a poignant moment, filled with a mix of emotions – relief, gratitude, and a profound sense of belonging. Mahmoud expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Somali government for their efforts in facilitating the return of displaced Somalis, describing it as a testament to the nation’s resilience and determination to rebuild.
Mahmoud’s story resonates with countless other Somali youth who have experienced the pain of displacement and the longing for home. His message is one of hope and encouragement, urging young Somalis around the world to embrace their roots and never lose sight of their dreams of returning to their homeland.
As Somalia continues on its path of recovery and reconstruction, stories like Mahmoud’s serve as powerful reminders of the unbreakable spirit of the Somali people and their unwavering commitment to rebuilding their nation.
