Celebrating 120 Years of the Somali Police Force: A Legacy of Security and Service

On December 20th, the Somali Police Force celebrated a remarkable milestone – the 120th anniversary of its establishment. This vital institution, founded in 1903, has been the backbone of security and law enforcement in the nation, playing a pivotal role in protecting the lives and property of Somali citizens.
The anniversary celebrations took place in Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiiraan region, where high-ranking police officials, government representatives, and community leaders gathered to honor the force’s legacy. The event was a testament to the unwavering commitment and sacrifices made by generations of Somali police officers in upholding the rule of law and ensuring public safety.
Leading the commemorations were Colonel Muuse Abdi Xayuuke, the Deputy Commander of the Hiiraan Regional Police, and Colonel Abdullahi Mahmoud, the Commander of the Beledweyne Police Station. They extended heartfelt congratulations to all members of the Somali Police Force, acknowledging their invaluable service and the challenges they have overcome throughout the years.
“Today, we celebrate a significant day in our nation’s history,” Colonel Xayuuke declared. “The Somali Police Force is the mother of all security forces in Somalia, and without it, there would be no statehood. These brave men and women are the guardians of our citizens’ lives and property.”
The celebrations were graced by the presence of esteemed guests, including the Mayor of Beledweyne, Mohamed Ali Mahmoud, the Deputy Minister of Justice, Mohamed Hassan, and the Deputy Mayor for Security and Politics, Qarax. They all echoed their profound gratitude and admiration for the police force’s unwavering dedication and sacrifices.
“On this momentous occasion, I extend my warmest congratulations to all members of the Somali Police Force, especially those serving in the Hiiraan region,” said Mayor Mahmoud. “Your commitment to ensuring our safety and upholding the rule of law is truly commendable.”
The event also highlighted the force’s historical roots, tracing its origins back to the early 20th century when Somalia was under Italian colonial rule. Established on December 20, 1903, the Somali Police Force has weathered numerous challenges, including the nation’s struggle for independence and the subsequent civil unrest that followed.
