On this Somali Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions of educators across the nation. These dedicated individuals are not just imparting knowledge but shaping the future of Somalia, one student at a time.
In the words of Mohamed Abdi Mahmoud, the principal of Ibrahim Geedow School, “We are part of the staff of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia. We are delighted to still be receiving salaries and educating young Somalis, guiding them as we were taught.”
The teachers at Ibrahim Geedow School are a testament to the resilience and determination of Somali educators. Despite challenges, they continue to nurture the next generation, instilling in them the values of Somali identity, Islamic principles, and a sense of patriotism.
Mohamed Abdi Mahmoud emphasizes the profound impact teachers have on their students, saying, “The teacher is the only one who can instill in the student the spirit of Somaliness and Islam, and the need for self-respect and love among Somali citizens.”
Education goes beyond academic knowledge; it encompasses the cultivation of ethics, morals, and respect for humanity. A teacher’s role is not only to impart information but also to shape character and instill the virtues that make a person truly human.
As Somalia continues its journey of rebuilding and progress, the importance of education cannot be overstated. Mohamed Abdi Mahmoud reminds us, “A nation cannot prosper without educating its people. The more educated the people, the more prosperous the nation becomes.”
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education, under the leadership of the former minister, has made remarkable strides in expanding access to education. Public schools have been established, offering free education to students, a golden opportunity for those who have endured decades of conflict and displacement.
On this auspicious occasion, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all Somali teachers, wherever they may be in the world. Their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to shaping young minds and building a better future for Somalia are truly inspiring.
To the teachers, we say: Your efforts are not in vain. You receive a double reward – the salary from the government and the eternal reward from Allah for guiding and educating the youth. Do not lose hope, for your noble work is paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.
