Combating Recurring Droughts in Somalia: A Call for Collaborative Research

Somalia has grappled with recurring droughts for decades, with devastating impacts on lives and livelihoods. In a recent gathering, government officials, academics, and experts convened to address this pressing issue through collaborative research efforts.
The Minister of Family Affairs emphasized the need for concerted action, drawing from the nation’s collective knowledge and experiences. He highlighted the cyclical nature of droughts, which historically occurred every ten years, each with a distinct name reflecting its severity, such as “Xaaraamo cun,” “Hawaara,” “Arba looran,” “Jiitamaba,” “Gaar gaariaar,” “Dabadheer,” and “Dhabin jaalaal.”
These droughts claimed countless lives and livestock, particularly in the northern and central regions of Somalia. However, the Minister noted that the current era presents opportunities for more effective drought management, given the advancements in knowledge, technology, and global interconnectedness.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by previous generations, he stressed the importance of leveraging modern resources and expertise to develop sustainable solutions. The collaborative research initiatives aim to unravel the underlying causes of these recurring droughts and devise strategies to mitigate their impacts.
By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge sharing among academic institutions, researchers, and policymakers, the Minister expressed confidence in their ability to break the cycle of droughts and enhance Somalia’s resilience to climate-related challenges.
The gathering served as a call to action, urging all stakeholders to contribute their expertise and resources towards this vital endeavor. Through collective efforts, the Minister envisions a future where Somalia can effectively address drought challenges, safeguarding the well-being of its people and ensuring sustainable development.
