Empowering Persons with Disabilities in Somalia: A Collaborative Effort

In a joint effort to uplift the rights of persons with disabilities, the National Disability Agency of Somalia, in collaboration with disability organizations in Galmudug, recently held an awareness-raising event in Dhusamareb. The gathering brought together members from both disability organizations and various segments of the community.
The primary objective was to explore strategies for advancing the government’s policies on promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. Participants from disability organizations and the broader community welcomed the idea of establishing a unified legal framework to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities.
One participant emphasized the need for persons with disabilities to be recognized as equal members of society, with the ability to access education, express themselves freely, and contribute their perspectives. Another participant expressed gratitude for the efforts of the National Disability Agency and the visiting officials, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing disability-related issues.
Nabadoon Jamaal Abdishakur, the Social Affairs Advisor at the Ministry of Interior of the Galmudug State, stressed the necessity of cooperation and support to empower persons with disabilities and ensure their full participation in society and access to their rights.
A representative from the Ministry of Women and Human Rights of the Galmudug State affirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting disability organizations within the state.
Sundus Abdullahi Hussein, a senior member of the National Disability Agency of Somalia, provided insights into the purpose of the awareness-raising event and the progress of the Disability Act, which is currently awaiting the signature of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Hussein emphasized the importance of promoting the rights of persons with disabilities, addressing their needs, and ensuring equal opportunities and empowerment within the community. She expressed optimism that the Disability Act will be enacted soon, paving the way for the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities in Somalia.
The event highlighted the collaborative efforts of disability organizations and government entities in raising awareness, advocating for inclusive policies, and empowering persons with disabilities to fully participate in all aspects of society.
