Empowering Somali Youth in Agriculture: A Promising Future

The Somali Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation recently hosted an engaging scientific discussion at its headquarters in Mogadishu. The event aimed to encourage and empower Somali youth interested in agricultural entrepreneurship.
Organized by the Ministry’s Department of Agricultural Development and Trade, the event brought together stakeholders from various universities and government officials. All participants underscored the importance of supporting and nurturing young minds with innovative agricultural ideas.
The Somali youth in attendance urged the Ministry to create a platform to showcase their agricultural innovations. They expressed their desire to introduce new and creative solutions to the sector.
Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Kheyre, commended the youth’s enthusiasm and announced plans for an upcoming grand event. This event would gather young agricultural entrepreneurs to leverage their knowledge and expertise in driving innovation within the sector.
The Minister proposed establishing a “Modern Agricultural Youth Cooperative” across different regions. This cooperative would serve as a collaborative platform, enabling young farmers to pool their resources, share ideas, and collectively contribute to the advancement of Somali agriculture.
One of the key initiatives mentioned was the establishment of an “Innovation Center.” This center would provide a dedicated space for youth to explore, experiment, and develop cutting-edge agricultural solutions. The Minister emphasized the center’s potential to foster entrepreneurship, facilitate knowledge exchange, and propel the country’s agricultural sector forward.
The discussion highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to supporting youth-led initiatives and harnessing the power of innovation to address challenges in the agricultural sector. By empowering the younger generation and providing them with the necessary resources and platforms, Somalia aims to pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous future in agriculture.
