The Somali Minister of Agriculture has outlined an ambitious plan to empower the nation’s youth in the agricultural sector. In a recent address, the minister highlighted the immense potential in agriculture and the need to engage young people in modern farming practices.
“It is truly a blessing to see Somali youth recognizing the honor and value in agriculture,” the minister stated. He emphasized that farming not only sustains life but also holds spiritual significance, nourishing both the world and the hereafter.
The minister’s vision revolves around fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth. He plans to establish an “Innovation Center” where young minds can collaborate, ideate, and transform their concepts into tangible projects. This center will serve as a hub for agricultural research, experimentation, and the development of cutting-edge technologies tailored to Somalia’s unique needs.
Recognizing the importance of practical training, the minister aims to facilitate internships and hands-on learning opportunities at leading agricultural institutions and universities. By partnering with these institutions, aspiring farmers and entrepreneurs will gain invaluable knowledge and skills in sustainable farming methods, greenhouse cultivation, irrigation techniques, and more.
Moreover, the ministry plans to leverage technology to disseminate agricultural knowledge and best practices directly to the public. Through mobile platforms and social media, they aim to reach thousands of Somalis, keeping them informed about new developments, market trends, and available resources.
Collaboration with the private sector and international organizations is also a key component of the minister’s strategy. He intends to facilitate access to financing and extend loan periods for smallholder farmers, enabling them to invest in modern equipment and techniques. Additionally, efforts will be made to establish local value chains and reduce reliance on imported agricultural products, thereby boosting the nation’s self-sufficiency.
“We will encourage and support our youth to embrace agriculture as a noble and rewarding profession,” the minister affirmed. “Through innovation, cooperation, and a commitment to sustainable practices, we can pave the way for a prosperous and food-secure Somalia.”
The minister’s vision has been warmly received by youth leaders, agricultural experts, and international organizations, who commend the government’s focus on empowering the next generation and promoting sustainable development.
