The Somali Federal Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation recently hosted a scientific discussion aimed at promoting youth entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector. The event, organized by the Ministry’s Agricultural Development and Trade Department, brought together officials from various universities across the country and government representatives.
Participants unanimously underscored the importance of encouraging and supporting young people with innovative ideas in agriculture. The Somali youth in attendance were urged by the Ministry to bring forward their agricultural entrepreneurship projects and ideas.
During the event, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Mohamed Abdi Kheyre Maareeye praised the youth’s efforts and announced plans for an upcoming major conference. This conference will gather young agricultural entrepreneurs to leverage their expertise and foster collaboration through the establishment of an “Association of Modern Youth Farmers.”
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to providing the necessary support and resources to nurture these innovative ideas. He stated, “Here, we will open centers of excellence where the engineering expertise mentioned earlier can truly thrive. We have witnessed individuals engaged in entrepreneurship and innovation, and the Ministry aims to support such youth who wish to introduce fresh concepts.”
Recognizing the diverse potential of the agricultural sector, the Minister clarified that the proposed Innovation Center would not solely focus on crop farming but also encompass livestock and other related industries. “We invite all Somali youth to join us in this endeavor, God willing,” he added.
The event showcased promising agricultural projects developed by Somali youth, highlighting the nation’s determination to empower its young population and drive sustainable development through innovation in the agricultural sector.
