In a significant step towards inclusive constitutional reform, Somali government authorities responsible for reviewing the constitution, along with traditional elders and religious scholars from the Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn (SSC-Khatumo) regions, convened in Las Anod city. The gathering aimed to discuss and seek input on proposed amendments to articles 5 through 9 of the Federal Constitution of Somalia.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, the Oversight Committee for Constitutional Review, and the Ministry of Justice, Religious Affairs, and Constitutional Affairs of the SSC-Khatumo administration.
The Mayor of Las Anod opened the meeting, urging the elders and scholars to actively contribute their insights and perspectives. The Minister of Justice, Religious Affairs, and Constitutional Affairs of SSC-Khatumo, General Abdi Hassan Hijaar, emphasized the crucial role of the region’s elders and scholars in shaping the constitutional amendments.
“Today, we are joined by the esteemed elders and religious scholars of the SSC-Khatumo region, whom we deeply appreciate for their presence and participation,” said General Hijaar. “They are the pillars upon which our community stands, and their guidance is invaluable in this process.”
The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government, Ahmed Abdirrahman Hassan, commended the inclusive approach, stating, “We are truly delighted by your participation in this important event. As you know, the three institutions involved – the Ministry of Justice, the Constitutional Review Oversight Committee, and the Joint Parliamentary Committee – are all present here today.”
Hassan further underscored the significance of public engagement in the constitutional review process, emphasizing that the constitution belongs to the people and should reflect their aspirations.
The meeting witnessed active discussions and exchanges between the government representatives, elders, and scholars, as they collectively explored ways to ensure the constitutional amendments align with the values, traditions, and aspirations of the Somali people.
