Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, recently hosted a pivotal conference focused on food safety standards and the facilitation of cross-border trade within the East African region. Organized by the Somali Inspection and Certification Board, in collaboration with the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN), the event brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, business leaders, and representatives from various sectors, to address the critical issue of food security and economic development.
The conference aimed to raise awareness about the importance of implementing internationally recognized food safety standards and certification processes. By adhering to these standards, Somali businesses and producers can more easily export their products across borders, thereby fostering economic growth and expanding trade opportunities within the region.
Abdirashid Mohamed Abdi and Suleiman, representatives from the Somali Inspection and Certification Board, emphasized the significance of the conference’s objectives. They highlighted the need for businesses to obtain internationally recognized certifications to ensure the safety and quality of their food products, enabling smoother cross-border trade and access to global markets.
The event featured insightful presentations and discussions led by Somali and international experts, who shared their knowledge and experiences in food safety management systems, such as the Townsend Food Safety Management System. Participants included government representatives, business leaders, and companies operating in the food industry, as well as two firms specializing in food safety training and certification.
One of the key focuses of the conference was the harmonization of food safety standards and certification processes within the East African region. The East African Community (EAC) has been working towards unifying standards and regulations to facilitate the smooth movement of goods across borders. Somalia’s active participation in this effort is crucial for its economic growth and integration into the regional trade network.
Experts emphasized that by adopting harmonized standards and obtaining internationally recognized certifications, Somali businesses can overcome significant barriers to cross-border trade. This, in turn, will open up new markets and opportunities, contributing to the country’s economic prosperity.
