GAALKACYO, Somalia – In a move to promote the local fishing industry and spur economic growth, officials from Gaalkacyo district in Galmudug State, along with local traders and community members, inaugurated a large new fish market called the East African Fisheries.
The facility, aimed at selling fish and related products, holds significant importance for the Mudug region’s fishing and maritime trade. During the opening ceremony, officials and traders alike highlighted the market’s potential to drive development in the area.
Leading Fishing Company Expands Operations
Abdullahi Haji Abdi, one of the officials from the East Africa Fisheries and General Trading Company, expressed excitement at opening their latest branch in Gaalkacyo after 28 successful years of operations. “Today, we are opening the largest distribution center for fish and related products like nets and hooks in Mudug,” he stated.
The company, already present in regions like Galgudud, Adado, Dhusamareb, Guriceel, and Cadado, sees the Gaalkacyo market as a strategic expansion to better serve the local population and facilitate economic growth through the fishing industry.
Local Leaders Laud Economic Opportunities
Members of the Gaalkacyo District Council and local business leaders welcomed the new market, recognizing its potential to create jobs and stimulate the regional economy. One council member stated, “We welcome the East Africa Fisheries vision and any progress that develops our city. This fish service is crucial, and its importance cannot be overstated.”
Another speaker emphasized the significance of the fishing industry for Somalia, a nation historically reliant on agriculture, livestock, and maritime resources. “We are pleased with this valuable addition and commend the team led by Abdullahi Haji Abdi for their commendable efforts,” remarked Bashir Isse Geedi, Director of Trade and Investment for Gaalkacyo District.
