The 10th International Conference on Somali Studies, organized by Somali National University and supported by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, concluded in Mogadishu with a resounding success. Over the course of three days, more than 30 research papers were presented, exploring critical topics related to education, labor, and justice.
The conference brought together Somali scholars from universities across Africa, as well as international experts. Among the attendees were the Vice President of Somalia, Salah Jama, and the President of Somali National University, Prof. Hassan Ismail Gaal, who emphasized their commitment to implementing the recommendations and findings from the conference.
Prof. Gaal expressed his gratitude to all the participants, stating that the university aims to be the driving force behind education in Somalia, as it was the foundation and cradle of higher learning in the country. He acknowledged the sacrifices and hard work of those who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge, both living and deceased.
The Minister of Education and Higher Education, Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, praised the successful organization of the conference, noting that it was the first such event in Somalia in over 35 years. He pledged that the ministry would incorporate the research findings into curricula, textbooks, and university programs, ensuring that Somali intellectual contributions shape the future of education.
Participants expressed optimism that the conference would significantly impact the progress of Somali education. They called for the continuation of such initiatives, citing the fruitful discussions and exchange of ideas that took place.
During the final day, four research papers focused on economic development were presented, offering diverse perspectives on the path to economic progress in Somalia. In his closing remarks, Vice President Salah Jama commended the conference’s success, expressing hope for a prosperous and reunited Somalia where opportunities abound for the youth.
The conference highlighted the importance of intellectual discourse and collaboration in shaping Somalia’s future. By bringing together scholars, policymakers, and experts, it fostered an environment conducive to addressing critical challenges and charting a course towards progress in education, justice, and economic development.
