Hir-Shabelle Launches Domestic Revenue Mobilization Campaign in Balcad

Hir-Shabelle’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has officially launched a campaign to mobilize domestic revenue in the regional state. The kickoff event took place in Balcad, Middle Shabelle region, with a focus on raising awareness and understanding of domestic revenue matters.
The gathering brought together local business owners, women’s groups, youth representatives, the district commissioner, and other stakeholders. It aimed to enhance collaboration and foster a shared commitment to boosting the state’s domestic revenue sources.
During the event, representatives from women’s organizations and business leaders shared their perspectives on the importance of domestic revenue generation for economic growth and development.
“As a businesswoman, I understand the significance of a thriving business sector,” said one participant. “However, I would like to see businesses flourish and trade activities expand. For that, we need to implement effective policies that promote economic growth.”
Another speaker, a local trader, emphasized the link between peace, security, and economic prosperity. “The success of our businesses is directly tied to the peace and stability we enjoy, thanks to God’s blessings. While I engage in trade and work diligently, I also believe that businesses should show compassion to the people. We have witnessed the plight of the poor, displaced, and vulnerable among us. I urge my fellow traders who have been fortunate to support those in need.”
Balcad holds a significant place in Somalia’s history as a hub of economic activity during the central government’s reign. The district served as a vital commercial center, contributing to the country’s overall revenue. Historically, it played a crucial role in supplying agricultural and livestock products to other regions.
Abdirahman Isse Addow, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, highlighted the event’s objectives. “Today, we have gathered in Balcad to discuss ways to enhance domestic revenue collection. This is part of our ongoing efforts to improve the financial self-sufficiency of the Hir-Shabelle state. By focusing on strengthening our internal revenue sources, we aim to reduce reliance on external aid.”
The minister emphasized the importance of streamlining tax collection systems, improving efficiency, and promoting transparency in revenue management. He called upon businesses, communities, and government entities to collaborate in achieving these goals.
Balcad’s district commissioner, in his address, welcomed the initiative and commended the Ministry of Finance for engaging local stakeholders. He acknowledged the district’s rich history and potential, expressing optimism about the positive impact of the revenue mobilization campaign on economic development and service delivery.
The event underscored the Hir-Shabelle administration’s commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and self-reliance. By engaging communities, businesses, and relevant stakeholders, the state aims to build a sustainable domestic revenue base to fund its development priorities and reduce dependence on external aid.
