A team of experts from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has concluded a five-day working visit to Somalia, aimed at assessing the country’s readiness for an upcoming aviation safety audit. The delegation, led by Milton Simé, ICAO Regional Officer for Aviation Safety in Eastern and Southern Africa, held consultations with the Somali Minister of Transport and senior officials from the Somali Civil Aviation Authority.
During their stay, the ICAO team examined various aspects of Somalia’s aviation sector, including the implementation of safety regulations, operational procedures, and technological infrastructure. Their assessment focused on ensuring compliance with international aviation standards set by ICAO.
In a press briefing, Minister of Transport Abdirahman Abdow Hashi highlighted the significance of the visit, describing it as a crucial step towards strengthening Somalia’s aviation safety capabilities and aligning with global best practices.
“The experts’ assessment, which concluded today, has provided valuable insights into the current state of our aviation sector,” said Minister Hashi. “They have identified areas where we excel and others that require improvement. We are committed to addressing the recommendations and ensuring that our airports, particularly Aden Adde International Airport, meet the highest international standards.”
Milton Simé, the ICAO team leader, commended Somalia’s efforts in improving its aviation safety framework. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between ICAO and the Somali Civil Aviation Authority to enhance the country’s aviation sector.
“Our visit aimed to support Somalia in preparing for the upcoming ICAO audit,” Simé stated. “We have worked closely with the Civil Aviation Authority to assess their readiness and provide guidance on areas that require further attention. This cooperation is crucial for ensuring that Somalia’s aviation industry operates in accordance with global safety standards.”
The ICAO team’s assessment covered various aspects of aviation safety, including airport operations, air traffic management, aircraft maintenance, and personnel training. Their recommendations will serve as a roadmap for the Somali Civil Aviation Authority to implement necessary improvements and address any deficiencies identified.
Somalia’s aviation sector has undergone significant development in recent years, with efforts to modernize infrastructure and align with international regulations. The country recognizes the importance of a robust and safe aviation industry for facilitating economic growth, tourism, and regional connectivity.
As Somalia continues its journey towards enhancing aviation safety, the collaboration with ICAO and the implementation of the experts’ recommendations will be pivotal in ensuring the country’s compliance with global standards and providing a safe and reliable air travel experience for both domestic and international passengers.
