New Somali Military Chief Outlines Vision for Strengthening National Forces

Somalia’s newly appointed Chief of the National Armed Forces, General Odowaa Yusuf Rage, has outlined his comprehensive vision for rebuilding and strengthening the country’s military during an official handover ceremony. Addressing top government officials, military leaders, and international partners, General Rage emphasized his commitment to developing a professional and capable national army.
In his remarks, the military chief highlighted several key priorities for the Somali National Army (SNA) under his leadership. Firstly, he pledged to focus on enhancing the training and skill development of SNA personnel across all branches – army, navy, and air force. This includes establishing robust training academies and curricula to produce highly-skilled soldiers capable of fulfilling their national duties effectively.
Secondly, General Rage underscored the importance of improving healthcare services for SNA troops, particularly for those injured in combat operations. He announced plans to upgrade existing military hospitals and establish new medical facilities to ensure comprehensive care for wounded soldiers, as well as support for the families of fallen heroes.
A significant portion of the military chief’s speech addressed the ongoing fight against the Al-Shabaab militant group. He vowed to intensify efforts to combat the extremist organization, which continues to pose a major threat to Somalia’s security. General Rage called on all Somalis to unite behind the national forces in this critical battle, emphasizing that defeating Al-Shabaab is a prerequisite for the country’s progress and development.
Moreover, the new military leader expressed his gratitude to the regional forces and local militias who have supported the fight against Al-Shabaab, pledging continued cooperation and coordination with these allied groups.
In his concluding remarks, General Rage thanked the country’s leadership, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, for entrusting him with this crucial responsibility. He also acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor, praising the progress made in rebuilding the SNA.
The military chief’s comprehensive vision reflects the Somali government’s determination to establish a strong, professional, and well-equipped national army capable of defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. As Somalia continues its journey towards stability and development, the role of the revitalized SNA will be pivotal in ensuring lasting peace and security.
