Outgoing Somali Military Chief Reflects on Achievements and Challenges

In a reflective address, the outgoing chief of the Somali National Army, General Odawa Yusuf Rageh, highlighted the achievements and challenges faced during his tenure over the past 7-10 months.
Expressing gratitude to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia for entrusting him with this role, Gen. Rageh emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening the country’s military capabilities. He commended the support received from allies such as the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kenya, and Uganda in providing training and equipment to Somali forces.
However, Gen. Rageh also drew attention to a pressing issue – the illegal charcoal trade, which he described as a significant threat to Somali society. He called on the Prime Minister to launch a campaign to safeguard the rights of the community and address the adverse effects of this illicit activity.
“There is a great concern about the charcoal trade and the smuggler, who has caused many problems for our society,” Gen. Rageh stated. “I urge the Prime Minister to take action to protect the rights of our people and address the events surrounding this issue.”
Gen. Rageh also highlighted the ongoing efforts to professionalize the Somali National Army, including training programs for new recruits, promotions for officers, and the appointment of qualified personnel to leadership positions. He emphasized the importance of proper documentation and vetting processes to maintain the integrity of the armed forces.
“If there is a passport, an ID, or any other document, it must be checked thoroughly,” he said. “Otherwise, the country faces the risk of infiltration by these smugglers.”
Acknowledging the sacrifices made by Somali soldiers, Gen. Rageh paid tribute to those who lost their lives or were injured in the line of duty. He expressed his gratitude to the officers and staff who supported him during his tenure and wished success for the incoming chief, Odawa Yusuf Rageh, who will take over command.
As Somalia continues its efforts to rebuild and strengthen its security forces, Gen. Rageh’s reflections highlight the importance of addressing internal challenges, fostering regional cooperation, and maintaining professionalism within the military ranks.
