For the first time in 34 years, the Somali Air Force, ground troops, and naval forces jointly conducted operations, establishing strategic bases along the country’s borders. The deployment of these jets has bolstered the security forces tasked with combating the al-Shabab militant group and safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.
Residents and security forces stationed along the regional borders have applauded the federal government’s swift support, expressing their readiness to defend their homeland. Senior military officials from various branches warmly welcomed the jets to Beledxaawo, emphasizing their importance in current operations against al-Shabab.
General Ahmed Hassan Sarey, the Commander of the 10th Battalion, Gaashaanle Dhexe Aadan Siyaad Cabdi, and Gaashaanle Sare Xuseen Cali Xaashi, the Gedo Regional Police Commander, collectively stated that the jets would significantly contribute to the ongoing operations against al-Shabab in the Gedo region.
“Today, we welcome the Somali National Army’s air force jets,” said a senior military official. “These jets have joined the regional operations aimed at liberating the land from the al-Shabab militants. We express our sincere gratitude to the government, the Prime Minister, and the President. We also thank the Commander of the Somali National Army.”
“We have the Somali National Army, which has been built through the efforts of those who participated in its establishment and reconstruction. We thank them all,” he added. “This is just the beginning, as the military jets have arrived today. We hope the government will establish its presence everywhere, and the local people will support the government’s efforts.”
The senior officials noted that after the destruction, no government aircraft had arrived in the region until now, making this a momentous occasion worthy of celebration. They extended their gratitude to the President, Prime Minister, and the commanders of the Somali National Army for this historic achievement, describing it as a significant day for the people of Gedo.
“This is the first time the Somali National Army’s jets have landed in Beledxaawo since the collapse,” said one official. “I extend my congratulations and express our appreciation to those who made this possible.”
Over the past two years, efforts have been made to enhance the operational capabilities and essential services of the Somali Armed Forces, including equipping the Air Force with fighter jets. The Somali Air Force is now actively engaged in operations throughout the country against al-Shabab, establishing bases and forward operating positions specifically designed to support air operations.
