Somali Elders and Scholars Engage in Constitutional Review Process

Authorities responsible for the constitutional review process, along with traditional elders and Islamic scholars from the Sool, Sanaag and Cayn (SSC) Khaatumo region, convened a meeting in the city of Las Anod. The purpose was to deliberate on proposed amendments to articles 5-9 of the Federal Constitution of Somalia.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, the Constitutional Review Commission, and the Ministry of Justice, Religious Affairs and Constitutional Affairs of the Khaatumo State administration.
The District Commissioner of Las Anod opened the meeting, urging the elders and scholars to actively contribute their perspectives and insights. Minister General Abdi Hassan Hijaar of the Khaatumo State emphasized the crucial role of the SSC Khaatumo elders and scholars in the constitutional amendment process.
Deputy Minister Ahmed Abdirrahman Hassan of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs highlighted the importance of broad public participation, as the constitution is the foundational law from which all other laws emanate. He stressed the need for the people to exercise their fourth estate role in shaping the constitution.
The meeting aimed to ensure inclusive dialogue and garner valuable input from the traditional leaders and religious authorities, who hold significant influence in Somali society. Their contributions are seen as essential for the constitutional review process to be truly representative and reflective of the diverse voices within the nation.
