Somali Military Chief’s Farewell Address: Revamping Security and Tackling Challenges

In a farewell address marking the end of his tenure, Somalia’s outgoing military chief, General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh, shed light on the nation’s security landscape and the challenges faced by its armed forces. The wide-ranging speech covered various aspects, including revamping security measures, expressing gratitude to international allies, and outlining future priorities.
The General commenced his address by acknowledging the immense responsibility entrusted to him by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, who appointed him to this pivotal role nearly 10 months ago. He extended his sincere gratitude to the President for this opportunity to serve the nation.
Reflecting on his time in office, General Rageh emphasized the importance of continuity, as he officially handed over responsibilities to his successor. He stressed that every individual aspires for progress and highlighted the collective duty to uphold the nation’s security interests, which his administration diligently fulfilled.
A central focus of the speech was the ongoing collaboration with international partners in enhancing the capabilities of Somalia’s military forces. The General expressed profound gratitude to allies such as the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kenya, and Uganda for their invaluable training and support. He acknowledged that while advanced equipment and vehicles are essential, the true strength lies in the knowledge and expertise imparted by these nations.
Addressing a pressing domestic issue, General Rageh called for a comprehensive campaign to safeguard the rights of Somali citizens, who have been adversely impacted by the proliferation of illegal roadblocks and extortion. He urged the Prime Minister to take decisive action, ensuring that all citizens’ rights are protected and that such harmful practices are eradicated.
The outgoing military chief also emphasized the importance of rigorous recruitment and vetting processes within the armed forces. He stressed the need to thoroughly screen potential recruits, including verifying their identification documents and background, to mitigate security risks posed by infiltrators or individuals with ulterior motives.
Furthermore, General Rageh paid tribute to the sacrifices made by Somali troops, honoring those who lost their lives or sustained injuries in the line of duty. He extended his condolences to the fallen and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded, recognizing their unwavering commitment to the nation’s security.
In closing, the General expressed his profound gratitude to his colleagues, including the Minister and Deputy Minister of Defense, as well as the various military commanders and personnel who supported him during his tenure. He urged them to extend the same level of cooperation and dedication to the incoming military chief.
As Somalia navigates through complex security challenges, General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh’s farewell address underscored the nation’s determination to revamp its security apparatus, foster international cooperation, and prioritize the well-being and rights of its citizens.
