Somali Parliamentary Sessions: Key Decisions and Developments

The joint session of Somalia’s bicameral parliament has approved the electoral laws that will govern the upcoming elections. The lawmakers from both houses discussed the legal framework for political parties and the electoral process.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre briefed the parliament on the conditions set for the registration of political associations. A total of 171 MPs voted in favor of the government’s roadmap, while no MPs opposed it.
In another development, the Minister of Planning and Economic Development attended the Caspian Sea Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. He highlighted Somalia’s efforts in currency reform and sought international support for the initiative. The minister met with Azerbaijani officials to discuss areas of mutual interest.
Discussions are also underway regarding potential amendments to Articles 5 and 9 of the Provisional Constitution. The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs organized a consultative meeting with traditional elders and religious scholars in Lasanod to gather their input.
On the security front, Somali forces conducted operations against al-Shabab militants in the Lower Shabelle region. The operations aimed to disrupt the group’s activities and secure areas previously controlled by the militants.
Furthermore, the Chief of Staff of the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces visited Tehran, Iran, and held talks with his Iranian counterpart. The discussions focused on enhancing security cooperation between the two countries.
