Somali President Congratulates New US President and Attends Disaster Management Conference

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has extended his congratulations to the newly elected US President Donald Trump on his historic victory in the 2016 presidential elections. President Mohamud expressed hope that the strong relations between Somalia and the United States would continue under the new administration.
In other news, President Mohamud recently attended a two-day conference on disaster management in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The conference, organized by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) in collaboration with the University of Mogadishu, brought together government officials, international organizations, and experts to discuss strategies for disaster preparedness and response in Somalia.
During the conference, the Minister of Education and other ministers and parliamentarians highlighted the importance of disaster risk reduction efforts in the country. Somalia has recently been removed from the list of non-compliant countries by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, paving the way for the country to receive up to $5 billion in debt relief.
The IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, congratulated Somalia on this achievement and assured continued support from the IMF in the country’s development efforts. The Somali government has expressed its commitment to further economic and social reforms to ensure sustainable progress.
