Somali Youth Engage in Discussions on Direct Elections

In a pivotal event at the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, the Somali National Forum brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss the prospects of direct elections in the country. The forum, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Federal Affairs, witnessed the participation of government ministers, members of parliament, experts from various sectors, representatives of federal member states, and the Banadir Regional Administration.
The highlight of the forum was the active engagement of Somali youth, who voiced their aspirations for a transition to a direct one-person, one-vote electoral system. This move was in line with the commitment made by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to facilitate direct elections in the country.
As the event commenced, hundreds of Somali youth from various districts of Banadir region, federal member states, and experts from the Somali diaspora converged at the venue, eager to contribute to the discussions.
The youth forum took center stage, providing a platform for young Somalis to express their readiness to participate in direct elections and play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s democratic future.
Government officials in attendance were expected to deliver insightful speeches highlighting the importance of youth engagement and the necessary steps to ensure a successful transition to direct elections.
With Somali youth constituting over 60% of the population, their participation and influence in the electoral process are considered vital for the country’s democratic progress.
