Somalia Hosts Successful Disaster Management Conference

The federal government of Somalia recently hosted a successful two-week conference on disaster management in the capital Mogadishu. The event was jointly organized by the National Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) and the University of Mogadishu.

The conference presented research studies on enhancing Somalia’s preparedness for disasters such as droughts, floods, and other calamities. Strategies for managing risks and mitigating the impacts of disasters were also discussed.

The conference was officially closed by the First Deputy Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Sadiya Yasin Haji Samatar, in the presence of the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayr. Both officials commended the organizers and participants for their efforts in addressing this crucial issue.

The Director-General of SODMA, Mahmoud Ali Abdullahi, and the President of the University of Mogadishu, Professor Ibrahim Mohamed Mursal, expressed their gratitude to all those involved in organizing the conference. They stated their commitment to making this an annual event, aiming to continuously improve disaster preparedness and response in the country.

Several experts and scholars who participated in the conference highlighted the need for collaboration between government agencies and academic institutions to effectively tackle disaster management challenges. They emphasized the importance of evidence-based policymaking and the integration of scientific research into disaster management strategies.
