Somalian Oil Exploration: Prospects and Community Engagement

Somalia’s National Oil Company (NOC) is taking significant steps towards unlocking the country’s potential oil and gas reserves. In a recent visit to the coastal town of Hobyo, NOC officials engaged with local leaders, experts, and community members to provide updates on ongoing exploration activities and gather feedback.
The meeting, organized by the NOC, brought together engineers, administrators from Hobyo district, academics, politicians, and representatives from various segments of the local community. Mukhtar Abdullahi Mohamed, the Deputy Governor of Hobyo, expressed his delight in hosting the NOC delegation, emphasizing the importance of such interactions.
Abdulqadir Mahmoud Adan, the Chairman of the NOC, outlined the objectives of the visit and the company’s commitment to keeping local communities informed about the exploration process. He highlighted two key points: firstly, to provide updates on the agreements signed between the federal government and international companies regarding oil and gas exploration, and secondly, to gather community expectations and concerns.
“It is our responsibility to keep you informed about the developments in the areas where exploration activities are taking place,” Adan stated. “We are here to listen to your expectations and address any concerns you may have.”
The NOC’s efforts in Hobyo are part of a broader national initiative to assess and harness Somalia’s natural resources for economic development and prosperity. Sultan Mahmoud Ducale Kahiye, a prominent community leader, commended the NOC’s engagement and offered suggestions for strengthening resource exploration and utilization.
Local residents expressed their long-standing curiosity about the potential discovery of oil in their region. “We have always wondered what would happen if oil was found in our city,” said one attendee. “We are grateful that the NOC is keeping us informed and involving us in the process.”
The NOC’s investment in Hobyo is significant, with a reported $70 million already spent on the construction of a port facility as part of the first phase of operations. This commitment demonstrates the company’s dedication to developing the region and contributing to the country’s overall progress.
As exploration activities continue, the NOC remains committed to fostering open dialogue and cooperation with local communities. Addressing concerns, managing expectations, and ensuring transparency are crucial for building trust and paving the way for responsible resource development.
The potential discovery of oil and gas reserves in Somalia holds promise for economic growth and improved living standards. However, it is essential that the exploration process prioritizes community engagement, environmental sustainability, and equitable distribution of benefits.
