Somalia Embarks on Path to Direct Elections

## Somalia Moves Towards Direct Elections

Somalia’s long-awaited journey towards a one-person, one-vote election has taken a significant step forward. After more than two decades of conflict and instability, the federal government has made substantial progress in paving the way for direct elections.

### Constitutional Reforms and Legislative Groundwork

In a landmark move, the Somali Parliament approved four chapters of the provisional constitution, including provisions for the electoral process. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud subsequently signed a decree setting the country on the path to a direct electoral system.

The Ministry of Interior has been diligently preparing the legal framework, drafting three crucial laws: the Electoral Law, the Political Parties Law, and the National Electoral Commission Law. These laws have been approved by the Council of Ministers and are now awaiting parliamentary ratification.

### Enhancing Security and Stability

While challenges remain, the government has made significant strides in improving security across the country. Large swaths of territory have been liberated from the control of extremist groups, creating a more conducive environment for the electoral process.

“The majority of the country is now secure,” stated the Minister of Interior, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and inclusive electoral process.

### International Cooperation and Support

Somalia’s democratic transition has garnered support from the international community. Partners have provided technical assistance and resources to facilitate the electoral process, underscoring the global interest in Somalia’s stability and development.

### Remaining Challenges and Determination

Acknowledging the obstacles ahead, the government remains resolute in its commitment to delivering credible and transparent elections. Logistical challenges, such as voter registration and polling station logistics, are being addressed through meticulous planning and coordination.

As Somalia continues on this historic path, the federal government’s efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, promote security, and foster economic development will be crucial in ensuring a successful electoral process and a brighter future for all Somalis.
