In a major move to revitalize Somalia’s agricultural sector, the Federal Government of Somalia has imported more than 20 tractors for the first time since the country’s civil war. This initiative aims to empower Somali farmers and support the nation’s efforts to enhance food production and self-sufficiency.
The newly acquired tractors will play a crucial role in facilitating various farming activities across the country. During the ongoing planting season, these tractors will be instrumental in preparing fields, cultivating crops, and boosting overall agricultural productivity.
Mahmoud Mohamed Mahmoud, the Director-General of the Federal Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, a seasoned agricultural expert, explained the significance of these tractors. “The mini-tractor we have introduced to the world can perform four tasks simultaneously,” he said. “It can plow, cultivate, sow seeds, and create furrows, allowing one person to accomplish the work of many.”
Mahmoud emphasized the importance of modernizing agricultural practices in Somalia, stating, “We want to introduce techniques that Somali farmers have not yet adopted due to the disruptions caused by the prolonged conflict.”
This initiative marks a significant step towards restoring Somalia’s agricultural sector and achieving food self-sufficiency. The Federal Government recognizes the critical role of agriculture in driving economic growth and improving the livelihoods of Somali farmers.
Mohamed Abdi Khair, the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting farmers. “We aim to revive the institution that previously supported Somali farmers, which had over 1,500 tractors operating across the country,” he said. “Farmers could easily book and access these tractors at a nominal cost or even free of charge, depending on their circumstances.”
The Ministry of Agriculture is dedicated to reviving Somalia’s agricultural productivity and ensuring food security. By collaborating with international organizations supporting agricultural development, the ministry is promoting various crop cultivation initiatives within the country.
Abdirisaq Haji Saleban, a journalist based in Mogadishu, emphasized the positive impact of this initiative, stating, “We are witnessing significant progress in the agricultural sector, as people’s awareness and engagement in farming activities continue to increase, despite the challenges that persist.”
As Somalia strives to rebuild and achieve sustainable development, the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering farmers and boosting agricultural productivity is a crucial step towards a more prosperous and food-secure future for the nation.
