Somalia’s Historic Path to Direct Elections: A Journey Towards True Democracy

Somalia stands at a historic crossroads as it prepares to hold its first direct presidential election, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards true democracy. After years of turmoil and political instability, the country is embracing a one-person, one-vote system, empowering citizens to directly choose their leader through a transparent and inclusive process.
The move towards direct elections has been a long-awaited aspiration for the Somali people, who have endured decades of conflict and governance challenges. In the past, the country’s leaders were selected through a complex clan-based system, often marred by allegations of corruption and lack of accountability.
However, the winds of change are sweeping across the nation, as citizens eagerly await the opportunity to exercise their democratic right and shape the future of their country. The transition to a direct electoral system is seen as a crucial step towards fostering genuine representation, accountability, and political legitimacy.
“This is a momentous occasion for Somalia,” says Memo Lugeysana, the chairperson of the Women’s Association of Mudug Region and the spokesperson for Somali women worldwide. “We have come a long way, and the one-person, one-vote system represents the freedom we have fought for. If my turn comes, I will not hesitate to run for office and contribute to the progress of our nation.”
Lugeysana’s sentiments echo the hopes and aspirations of many Somali women, who have historically faced significant barriers to political participation. The direct elections offer a platform for their voices to be heard and their concerns to be addressed at the highest levels of decision-making.
Experts and political analysts view the transition to direct elections as a crucial step towards strengthening Somalia’s democratic institutions and fostering a more inclusive and participatory political culture. By giving citizens a direct say in choosing their leaders, the country is poised to experience a renewed sense of ownership and accountability in governance.
“The one-person, one-vote system is a welcome development for Mudug region,” says Mashruuc Faarax, the chairman of the Horumar neighborhood. “We are ready to embrace this opportunity and participate in shaping the future of our nation through free and fair elections.”
While the road ahead may be challenging, with potential logistical and security concerns, the Somali people remain steadfast in their determination to make their voices heard. The direct elections represent a beacon of hope for a nation that has endured immense hardships, offering a chance to break free from the shackles of the past and embrace a brighter, more democratic future.
As the electoral process unfolds, the international community will be watching closely, ready to support Somalia’s efforts to consolidate its democratic gains and ensure a peaceful and transparent transition of power.
