Somalia recently marked a significant milestone – the 83rd anniversary of its national police force. The occasion was celebrated with a grand parade showcasing various units of the Somali Police Force, including the riot police, intelligence, medical, sports, and traffic departments.
The event, graced by the presence of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, was a testament to the nation’s resilience and determination to restore order and pave the way for democratic elections.
In his address, President Mohamud commended the police force for their tireless efforts in maintaining security amidst challenging circumstances. He extended his congratulations to all departments, officers, and personnel, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the country’s stability.
“I congratulate you all on your remarkable achievements,” the President stated. “Your dedication and hard work, despite the difficult conditions you operate under, are truly commendable.”
Somalia’s police force, established in 1940, has undergone various transformations throughout the years, including a recent phase of reconstruction following the collapse of the central government. Today, the force operates predominantly in the regions of the republic, making significant strides in recent years to improve security and law enforcement capabilities.
President Mohamud emphasized the government’s commitment to holding free and fair elections, urging the police force and all security agencies to prepare for ensuring the safety and integrity of the electoral process. “We have promised the Somali people that they will choose their leaders through a transparent and democratic process,” he affirmed.
Lieutenant General Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar, the Police Commissioner, outlined his vision for leading and modernizing the police force. “The Somali Police Force is a symbol of our nation’s unity and honor,” he declared. “We are committed to serving the aspirations of the Somali people by building a professional, well-equipped, and rights-respecting force across the entire country.”
As Somalia continues its journey towards stability and democracy, the role of the police force remains pivotal. Restoring public confidence, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring a secure environment for the upcoming elections are among the top priorities.
The 83rd anniversary celebrations serve as a reminder of Somalia’s determination to overcome past challenges and pave the way for a brighter future, where the rights and aspirations of its people are safeguarded by a professional and accountable police force.
