Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other top officials have congratulated Somaliland’s newly elected President Abdirahman Abdi Osman, also known as Abdi Silanyo, following the region’s presidential election.
In a statement, President Mohamud praised the democratic process in Somaliland and expressed hope that the new administration would work towards strengthening ties with the federal government in Mogadishu. He urged President-elect Abdi Silanyo and the opposition parties to prioritize development and economic growth for the people of Somaliland.
Similarly, the Speaker of the Federal Parliament, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur, congratulated Abdi Silanyo and his deputy Mohamed Abdi Wabar on their electoral victory. He commended the people of Somaliland for their peaceful participation in the democratic process.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also extended his congratulations to the new Somaliland leader, expressing confidence that Abdi Silanyo would fulfill the aspirations of the Somali people for unity and cooperation.
The election in Somaliland, a semi-autonomous region in northwestern Somalia, was closely watched by the international community. Despite some minor incidents, observers have largely praised the peaceful conduct of the polls.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Barre emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the federal government and Somaliland authorities in addressing the challenges facing the Somali nation.
The Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Hodan Osman Abdi, also congratulated Abdi Silanyo during a meeting with African diplomats in Beijing. She expressed her commitment to strengthening the longstanding ties between Somalia and China.
As the new administration takes office in Somaliland, there is hope that it will work closely with the federal government in Mogadishu to promote stability, development, and unity for the Somali people.
