Somali Conference Tackles Disaster Management and Language Preservation

Disaster Management and Language Preservation in Focus

A two-day conference organized by the Somali National University and the Somali Language Development Agency (SOLDA) brought together experts to address Somalia’s pressing challenges. The event, held from November 6th to 7th, showcased over 20 research studies and four panel discussions involving more than 15 experts.

Maximizing Research for Effective Solutions
According to Mohamed Farah, Director of the Disaster Management Center at the Somali National University, the conference aimed to leverage research findings to develop practical solutions. “If the recommendations from these diverse studies are implemented, we believe they can significantly contribute to resolving the crises facing our nation,” he stated.

Tackling Recurring Crises through Informed Strategies
With Somalia grappling with recurrent disasters, the conference emphasized the importance of understanding the root causes to devise effective mitigation strategies. “When a crisis occurs, we must identify its underlying reasons to find appropriate solutions,” Farah explained, highlighting the event’s focus on evidence-based policymaking.

Integrating Recommendations into Government Initiatives
Farah expressed optimism that the government and relevant agencies would incorporate the conference’s recommendations into their strategic plans and daily operations. “By mainstreaming these research-driven insights, we can better address challenges like droughts and famines,” he added, underscoring the potential impact on Somalia’s development and stability.
