Somalia’s Revived Air Force and Naval Forces: A Path to National Security

Somalia’s efforts to rebuild its armed forces, particularly the air force and naval components, have taken a significant stride forward. In a recent visit to Asmara, Eritrea, accompanied by a Somali delegation, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced that Somali troops are undergoing extensive training in the country.
According to a government official who was part of the delegation, the focus of the training is on the air force and naval forces. Specifically, a group of university graduates is nearing the completion of their air force training in Eritrea within the coming months. This development marks a significant milestone in the revival of Somalia’s once formidable air force, which had been decimated during the civil war.
The official stated, “Our air force and naval forces, which were among the best in the region, were destroyed, but now the government has initiated the process of rebuilding them across various specializations to protect our land, sea, and air.”
Somalia’s efforts to strengthen its security apparatus extend beyond the partnership with Eritrea. The country has also entered into an agreement with Turkey to establish the strongest naval force in the region within the next five years. This comprehensive approach aims to safeguard Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity from external threats.
The official emphasized the importance of a strong military for the nation’s development, stating, “Without a disciplined force to protect its sovereignty and existence, any infrastructure development, such as building houses, roads, or ports, would be vulnerable to destruction.”
Regarding Somalia’s recent diplomatic tensions with Egypt over the latter’s request for a military base in the country, the official clarified that Somalia is an independent nation with the right to choose its partners. While Egypt is a fellow Arab League member and a friendly nation, Somalia will make decisions based on its national interests without compromising its sovereignty.
As Somalia continues to rebuild its armed forces, the focus on reviving the air force and naval capabilities underscores the country’s determination to ensure its security and territorial integrity. Through strategic partnerships and a comprehensive approach, Somalia is paving the way for a stronger and more secure future.
