Somalia’s Roadmap to Historic One-Person, One-Vote Elections

Somalia is on the cusp of a historic moment – its first-ever one-person, one-vote elections, a significant milestone in the nation’s democratic transition after decades of conflict and instability. The upcoming elections are not just a symbolic exercise but a testament to the country’s resilience and commitment to establishing a sustainable democratic system.
For over two decades, Somalia has been grappling with the challenges of nation-building and establishing a functional government. The current administration, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has made the implementation of a one-person, one-vote electoral process a top priority, fulfilling a long-standing constitutional requirement.

Preparations are well underway, with the Parliament approving four key chapters of the Constitution, including the Electoral Law, which outlines the electoral process. President Mohamud has signed a decree paving the way for the direct elections, further solidifying the government’s commitment.
The Ministry of Interior has been actively engaged in the preparatory process, drafting three crucial laws – the Electoral Law, the Political Parties Law, and the National Electoral Commission Law. These laws have been approved by the Council of Ministers and are now awaiting parliamentary approval, a critical step in ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.
While challenges remain, particularly in areas where al-Shabab militants still have a presence, the government is determined to ensure that the elections are inclusive and accessible to all eligible Somali citizens. Extensive security measures are being put in place to safeguard the electoral process and protect the rights of voters.
