The Somali government has officially rejected Ethiopia’s involvement in the new UN mission set to replace AMISOM in 2025. Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, confirmed that Ethiopia had violated Somalia’s sovereignty, leading to its exclusion from the upcoming African Union peacekeeping mission.
Additionally, Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ahmed Isse Awad, provided updates on the stalled peace talks between Somalia and Ethiopia, mediated by Turkey. He stated that while Turkey’s efforts are appreciated, the third round of negotiations failed to yield results, and the matter may now be taken to the UN Security Council.
Awad accused Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of making false promises of withdrawal from Somalia’s territory. He also criticized Ahmed’s understanding of history, claiming he disregarded past events that led to the conflict.
The Foreign Minister reiterated Somalia’s readiness for dialogue but emphasized that Ethiopia’s actions, including the deployment of troops into Somalia’s regions without consent, have undermined diplomatic efforts.
Meanwhile, the head of Somalia’s disaster management agency met with US officials to discuss strengthening aid efforts, resilience programs, and support for small businesses and job creation initiatives for vulnerable communities.
