Somalia’s Urban Development Program is an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming the country’s major cities through infrastructure development, economic empowerment, and community engagement. The program is being implemented in six cities: Mogadishu, Garowe, Kismayo, Baidoa, Dhuusamareeb, and Beledweyne, with the goal of strengthening local governance and driving sustainable growth.
During a recent meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, attended by officials from the Federal Government of Somalia, the Banadir Regional Administration, and representatives from the World Bank, the progress and impact of the program were highlighted. Mayors from Kismayo, Beledweyne, and Dhuusamareeb praised the initiative, stating that it has brought tangible changes to their cities and improved the lives of their residents.
One of the key achievements of the program has been the construction of roads and drainage systems, which have not only facilitated transportation but also addressed issues of flooding during heavy rains. The program has also focused on rehabilitating existing infrastructure, such as water catchment areas and drainage systems, ensuring their functionality and resilience.
In Mogadishu, the capital city, the current administration has undertaken numerous projects related to road construction, street lighting, and infrastructure development, all of which are part of the Urban Development Program’s efforts.
The Deputy Mayor of Banadir Region, Mohamed Ahmed Yarow, commended the program’s impact and expressed the administration’s commitment to implementing similar initiatives in the future. He emphasized the importance of such projects for Somalia and its cities, highlighting the challenges associated with constructing roads and drainage systems in a climate-changing environment.
The program’s success lies not only in its physical infrastructure improvements but also in its ability to engage and empower local communities. By involving youth, women, elders, and traditional leaders, the program has fostered a sense of ownership and sustainability, ensuring that the benefits extend beyond the project’s lifespan.
As Somalia continues its journey towards development and prosperity, initiatives like the Urban Development Program play a crucial role in laying the foundations for a prosperous future. By addressing the pressing needs of urban areas and empowering local communities, the program is paving the way for economic growth, improved living standards, and a more resilient and sustainable Somalia.
